BUTUAN CITY – Pope Francis is in critical condition after suffering a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis on Saturday, requiring high levels of oxygen, according to the Vatican.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalized for a week with pneumonia and a complex lung infection, also received blood transfusions due to low platelet counts linked to anemia.

Despite the worsening pain, the pope remains alert and spent the day sitting in an armchair. However, his prognosis remains uncertain, with doctors indicating that the main concern is the potential onset of sepsis, a serious complication that can occur with pneumonia.

As of Friday, there was no sign of sepsis, and Francis is responding to medications, though his condition remains precarious.

In response to ongoing speculation about the pope’s health, the Vatican has publicly addressed rumors regarding his potential resignation, clarifying that no such decision has been made. There is no canon law provision for a pope’s incapacitation, although Francis had previously written a letter of resignation for potential future use in case he is medically unable to decide.

Meanwhile, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin firmly denied reports of secret meetings with the pope’s chief canonist to discuss resignation, emphasizing that Francis remains conscious, eating, and continuing his work as usual. Despite his fragile health, Pope Francis is reportedly aware of his condition and the risks ahead.
