BUTUAN CITY – A rescue operation turned into a double tragedy after a speeding motorcycle, driven by an allegedly drunk man, rammed into emergency responders and the very victim they were trying to save, resulting in his death.
The incident took place along the National Highway in Sitio Pinantao, Barangay Sudapin, Kidapawan City on Saturday night.
A video captured during the incident shows emergency medics tending to an earlier accident victim, Froilan Panagsagan, when suddenly a fast-approaching motorcycle plowed through the scene. The motorcycle struck both Panagsagan and a female medic, causing further injuries. Panagsagan was taken to the hospital but was declared dead shortly after. The female medic sustained facial and body injuries but is now in stable condition.
The suspect, identified as Carlos Guabong Jr., is currently detained by authorities. Witnesses claim he was under the influence of alcohol during the time of the incident.
Shaira Panagsagan, Froilan’s grieving sister, expressed her heartbreak, saying their family was devastated not only by her brother’s initial accident but more so by the fact that he died after being hit again—this time by someone who should not have been on the road.
Froilan Panagsagan, a resident of Poblacion, Magpet, North Cotabato, was a criminology student who was set to begin his internship. His family said he had been eagerly preparing for his graduation and had looked forward to wearing his uniform with pride.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident and have confirmed that charges will be filed against Guabong.
