BUTUAN CITY – The International Criminal Court has rejected former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for provisional release, instructing him to stay in custody at The Hague.

In a ruling issued on Friday, October 10, the court’s Pre-Trial Chamber I determined that Duterte, who is also the current mayor of Davao City, poses a significant risk of evading justice, hindering legal proceedings, and potentially continuing criminal activities.

The three judges on the panel cited Duterte’s ongoing dismissal of the court’s authority—referring to his detention as “kidnapping”—along with his influential family ties as factors indicating he would likely flee if granted release.
