BUTUAN CITY – More than 30,000 people converged at the People Power Monument in Quezon City yesterday for the “Trillion Peso March,” a large interfaith and multisectoral demonstration denouncing alleged corruption linked to questionable flood-control projects.

Held on the 53rd anniversary of Martial Law under Ferdinand Marcos Sr., the rally attracted families, youth groups, Christian and Muslim communities, labor unions, and progressive organizations — undeterred by heavy rain.

Participants filled White Plains Avenue, demanding transparency and accountability as church leaders and public figures urged citizens to confront systemic abuse and press for reform.

The main protest was largely peaceful, but tensions arose near Ayala Bridge in Mendiola, where 17 people were arrested for allegedly hurling stones and setting fire to a trailer truck.

The Manila Police District said the suspects are now in custody and could face charges. Authorities emphasized a policy of maximum tolerance while moving quickly against those who damaged property or endangered others.

Organizers stressed that the march marks only the beginning of a nationwide campaign to expose corruption and seek justice.
