BUTUAN CITY – The weather bureau PAGASA reported Saturday night that the tropical cyclone formerly known as Bising has intensified into a severe tropical storm and was renamed Danas.

In its 11 p.m. advisory, PAGASA raised Gale Warning No. 1, warning of very rough seas up to 4.5 meters in the seaboard of Batanes and the western seaboard of the Babuyan Islands.

Danas was last located 410 km west of Basco, Batanes, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), with maximum sustained winds of 110 kph and gusts reaching up to 135 kph. It is expected to reach typhoon strength by Sunday and will move northeastward, briefly reentering the northwestern boundary of PAR between Sunday evening and Monday morning.

PAGASA also advised against sea travel in several areas due to rough to moderate sea conditions. Waves up to 3.5 meters were forecast in the western seaboard of Ilocos Norte, while moderate waves up to 2.5 meters are expected along the northwestern coast of Ilocos Sur and other parts of Ilocos Norte.

Seas of up to 2 meters are also anticipated in La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, and the remaining seaboards of Ilocos Sur. Mariners, particularly those on small vessels or motor bancas, are urged to take precautionary measures or avoid venturing out to sea until conditions improve.
