Pope Leo XIV: A New Chapter for the Catholic Church: Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost in 1955 in Chicago, is the first American Pope and a former missionary in Peru known for his pastoral work with marginalized communities. A member of the Augustinian Order and close in vision to Pope Francis, he was elected in 2025 and called for unity in his first address to the Church.
Historic Appointment
Robert Prevost has been elected as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and will be known as Pope Leo XIV. His election marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy.
Though born in the United States, Prevost is also viewed as a Latin American cardinal, owing to his many years of missionary and pastoral service in Peru. His deep ties to the region and commitment to its people have shaped his ministry and worldview.
Early Life and Background
Born in 1955 in Chicago, Robert Prevost is of Spanish and Franco-Italian heritage. He was raised in a devout Catholic household, served as an altar boy, and was ordained as a priest in 1982.
A key part of his spiritual formation came through the Augustinian Order, which he joined early in his religious life and remained a part of throughout his career.
Missionary and Pastoral Work
In 1985, Prevost moved to Peru as part of an Augustinian missionary effort. He would go on to spend much of his life there, eventually gaining Peruvian nationality and becoming a well-known figure in the Church and local communities.
During his time in Trujillo, he served for ten years as both a parish pastor and a seminary teacher. He is widely respected for his work with marginalized communities and his efforts to build bridges across social and cultural divides.
Ecclesiastical Career
Prevost’s leadership and pastoral sensitivity did not go unnoticed. He was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru by Pope Francis, who later elevated him to prominent roles within the Church hierarchy.
In January 2023, he became both Archbishop and Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in Latin America, a powerful office responsible for the selection and oversight of bishops. Within a few months, he was named Cardinal, reflecting his growing influence within the Church.
Papal Election and First Address
His election as Pope came as little surprise, especially since 80% of the cardinals who participated in the conclave had been appointed by Pope Francis—many of whom share Francis’s vision of a more pastoral, inclusive Church.
Before his name was even announced, crowds in St. Peter’s Square erupted in chants of “Viva il Papa” (Long live the Pope), demonstrating the anticipation and excitement surrounding his election.
In his first public address, Pope Leo XIV paid heartfelt tribute to his predecessor: “We still hear in our ears the weak but always courageous voice of Pope Francis who blessed us,” he said.
He closed with a message of unity and faith, telling the cheering crowds: “United and hand in hand with God, let us advance together.”
